Swimming is a good and healthy sport for both adults and children and they might be keen to learn swimming too as they grow.

 

In Singapore, you can either let them learn swimming through swimming lessons engaged by their schools or institutions.

 

Alternatively, you might also search for local swimming coaches and engaged them in your kid’s swimming lessons.

 

However, how do you know whether you had engaged the right coach for your kids so that your kids will learn the right water survival skills?

 

Well, there is a SwimSafer 2.0 certification swimming lesson for kids in Singapore to ensure your kids are learning the right skills and be proficient in swimming.

 

Let’s learn more about this SwimSafer 2.0 program.

 

What is SwimSafer 2.0?

 

The SwimSafer program is a national water safety certification developed by Sports Singapore to increase the standard of swimming proficiency in Singapore.

 

It is specially created to increase the water survival skills and swimming proficiency of kids below 16 years old in order to minimize drowning incidences in a fun manner.

 

The program is broken into six stages which include survival and activity skills. It is also the only program that is recognized by all schools, institutions, and water-related sports in Singapore.

 

The children will receive a stage completion e-certificate at the end of each stage.

 

Now let us look at the different stages of SwimSafer 2.0 below.

 

Stage 1: Introduction to Water Skills

 

The objective of stage one is to introduce general and deep-end water safety skills to your children in order to develop confidence and independence in the water.

 

They will also learn some swimming techniques such as forward and backward movement, safe entry and exit of the swimming pool, and personal water safety in Stage 1.

 

Stage 2: Fundamental Water Skills

 

Your kids will be learning the general skill development such as unassisted step entry into the water, sculling, feet first surface dives, personal water safety skills as well as water safety in aquatic environments.

 

There will also be some goals for them to achieve such as 25 meters of continuous swimming in this stage.

 

Stage 3: Personal & Stroke Development Skills

 

Your children will acquire entry skills that include the stride jump. They will also be learning sculling, underwater skills, and putting on a personal flotation device (PFD) whilst in water and swimming with it.

 

There will also be goals like achieving 50 meters of continuous swimming in Stage 3.

 

 

Bronze: Personal Survival & Stroke Improvement Skills

 

Your kids had acquired the basic fundamentals of swimming and water survival skills from the past 3 stages. The SwimSafer program will now focus on the development of their stroke techniques.

 

It will also come along with coordinated breathing in deep water and the introduction of throw rescues and more personal survival skills in this stage.

 

They will also need to achieve 100 meters of a variety of strokes as one of the goals.

 

 

Silver: Intermediate Personal Survival & Stroke Refinement Skills

 

Your kids will be introduced to more fundamentals of diving.  They will also develop skills such as personal survival knowledge that will continue with a situational context of swimming quickly away from a sinking boat.

 

The kids will be required to demonstrate efficient stroke techniques by swimming a variety of strokes over 200 meters within a given time frame in the Silver stage.

 

Gold: Advance Personal Survival & Swimming Skill Proficiency

 

The students will need to perform a variety of strokes to show their efficiency in the water for over 400 meters within a given time frame for each stroke.

 

There will also be personal survival skills such as making use of clothing to make a personal floatation device and swimming with them, putting on a life jacket in the water.

 

They also learn about the Heat Escape Lessening Posture technique.

 

Things to Take Note

 

SwimSafer Programmes need to be conducted by professional SwimSafer Instructors.  A certified instructor is able to provide a positive contribution to your child’s progress in water competency.

 

All certified SwimSafer Instructor will hold a valid SwimSafer Instructor card and are allowed to conduct SwimSafer Program
